DESCRIPTION

Not everyone gets excited when they hear the term 'digital competence'. People may even show resistance to the digital turnaround. Often this has to do with negative experiences or simply because people have absolutely no idea what it means. In this module we teach the trainer to deal with these resistances, to apply strategies to overcome the resistances. We also provide insight into the building blocks of digital competences. You must first have a foundation of digital literacy before you can proceed to more specialized subject-specific digital skills. Observation and giving proper and personalised feedback and feedforward are crucial for these beginning and hesitant learners. To a certain extent, this process can be automated by means of learning analytics. Another theoretical base can be found in the UTAUT-theory (Venkatesh et al. 2003). This theory identifies the key components in the acceptance and use of new technologies, and how to influence it. The UTAUT model consists of six main constructs: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, behavioural intention to use the system, and usage behaviour. The UTAUT distinguishes four essential determining components and four moderators. The first four constructs are determining components of usage behaviour and behavioural intention. The four moderators are age, gender, experience, and willingness to use. By means of examples and cases, we will demonstrate how the constructs of the model work together and how to influence them.
