DESCRIPTION

In the recent times, the current apprenticeship model has been replaced because of the increased demand for surgical proficiency and expertise, the reduced number of working hours and available teaching time at the OR and issues regarding patient safety. Herein, the main objective is to develop a training module that allows the surgical staff to learn at their own pace, without the pressure of having real patients in their own hands. As so, these types of trainings would benefit both the apprentice and the patient. On one hand, the trainee will have the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment. On the other hand, the actual patients will benefit from a better care and safer operation. This course intends to make use the available AI tools at the hospitals, such as full mannequin simulators, part-task trainers or bench models, and virtual reality systems as a way of achieving these outcomes.

This course will also contemplate mixed reality, a blend of physical and digital worlds, unlocking the links between human, computer, and environment interaction, based on advancements in computer vision, graphical processing power, display technology, and input systems by using holographic free-hands devices, such as Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist. As so, the Healthcare professionals can receive all the training and information necessary for the correct application of the best practices, even when they are not at the operating room. This kind of technology is powerful for better training and improving education on surgical tactics and methods (Zhu et al., PeerJ 2014, 2, e469.) The mixed-reality technology enables the clinical live stream to be supplemented visually with digital information, such as the patient’s drug charts and treatment information or radiographs, which can be superimposed as holograms onto the environment. The HoloLens2 allows the wearer to record their teaching sessions, ensuring the school can offer an ever- expanding library of cases, clinical interactions and knowledge for its students that is available at any time. For each country, a dedicated and specific program will be developed, according with their needs assessment.
