Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II

Since 1992, the University of Naples has been named after Frederick II, to underline its very ancient origins, dating back to 5 June 1224, when the Swabian emperor, as well as king of Sicily, issued the founding edict from Syracuse. Unlike in Bologna and other cities, the Neapolitan firm was born with an imperial act, aimed at forming the executive groups necessary for the government of the state. However, this secular origin would not have prevented heavy interference by the Church in his cultural life.

The centuries-old history of the University of Naples had many dark moments and setbacks, but also innovative impulses that attracted the attention of the European university and academic world to its teachers. Even in the most difficult phases, it never lost its attraction for a provincial student population who saw in university education prospects for social ascent and cultural elevation.

Universities in Portugal have an old tradition. The first University was founded in 1289 in Coimbra, as a response to the growing need for education, dissemination of knowledge and exchange of ideas, as well as communication with other European Universities. This tradition has remained to this day in which universities are fundamental institutions in Portuguese society.

Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded on the 11th of August 1973, and is the youngest of Lisbon’s three state Universities. Integrated within a framework of expansion and diversification of higher education, the University adopted a new model within the Portuguese system that stressed interdisciplinary approaches, technological developments while, at the same time, safeguarding offerings in traditional academic domains including medicine, sciences and humanities.
